Vitamins: Why do I Need Them?
2010-08-19 12:16
Have you ever wondered if taking vitamin and mineral supplements are really an essential part to ensuring that you stay healthy and receive adequate nutrients? Before you use any dietary supplement, you should assess your needs, evaluate your benefits, and understand how to choose what you should take.
Supplement users haven't proven to be more healthy than non supplement users. Although, some studies have shown that vitamin and mineral supplement users have lower rates of cardiovascular diseases, but it is unclear if it is directly related to the supplements. It is important to remember that if you take supplements that it doesn't replace the need to still eat a balanced diet, that is nutritious, low in calories, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium. They can't replace the nutrients in whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables. The Dietary Recommended Intakes (DRIs), published by the Institute of Medicine, are what is recommended amounts of safe and adequate dietary intakes. Anything taken above those recommended amounts can be harmful, even toxic. For example, too much vitamin A can cause birth defects and too much iron can cause higher risk of chronic disease. There is not enough data to suggest that a healthy person should take vitamin and mineral supplements over and above the DRIs. If you are eating nutritious meals, it may not be worth the costs to buy vitamin and mineral supplements . But, if you are not eating healthy or have certain health conditions, then supplements will be just what you need.
If you are a healthy person and eating a balanced diet that includes whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, lean meats and fish, and legumes then you may not benefit from any supplements. So let's take a look at people that might need to take vitamin supplements : people who can't eat healthy foods or doesn't consume at least 1,600 calories per day, vegetarians, women who are pregnant, breast-feeding or trying to get pregnant, women that have irregular or heavy periods, postmenopausal women, people that have problems with their digestive tract causing their bodies not to properly digest and absorb nutrients, certain medical conditions that affects how your body uses, absorbs or excretes nutrients like food allergies, food intolerance, chronic diarrhea or diseases of the intestines, liver, pancreas or gallbladder. Before you begin taking any vitamin supplements you should consult a doctor to see what supplements and doses are right for you.
There are some things to remember when taking supplements. First of all you should read the labels on the bottle. The labels provide some pertinent information that you need. It will tell you what the active ingredients are and what nutrients are included. It also will tell what a proper serving size is and how many nutrients in each. Make sure that the expiration date is listed. You also want to choose a multivitamin-mineral supplement that doesn't offer megadoses. The supplement should offer 100 percent of the Daily Value (DV) of all vitamins and minerals included. The exception is calcium, the vitamin would be a huge pill and you wouldn't be able to swallow it if it contained 100 percent DV of calcium. You should make sure to store the supplement bottle in a safe, cool, dry place. Also, keep on eye on the Food & Drug Administration's website to make sure the supplement you are taking isn't on their advisory list.
If you decide that taking supplements are for you, you can purchase discount vitamins , so that you are not spending a lot of money on them. There are several websites that sell discount vitamins . Typically the health stores are going to be higher priced, as you are paying for the convenience and overhead of retail.
