Natrol Guarana - 90 caps

Guarana is the common name of Paullinia cupana, a plant native to the Amazon Basin. For many years, its use was confined mainly to the soft drink market in Brazil, where it is generally regarded as a health tonic. Guarana has also been widely accepted in other South American countries such as Peru, whose guarana beverage market has seen phenomenal growth in recent years. More recently guarana has seen increased use in the US and Europe, both as an ingredient in energy drinks and in pill or powdered form. Because of increased usage, there has been a great deal of research in recent years to determine the active ingredients in guarana and how they work in humans.

People who use guarana claim to gain increased cognition and memory as well as a slight elevation in mood and energy. There have also been claims of slow, steady weight loss from the use of guarana. The most obvious cause for these effects is the caffeine content of guarana, which is considerably higher than coffee. There have been some counter claims that while the purported effects of guarana are real, they are due completely to caffeine, and could just as easily be obtained by gulping a lot of coffee. However, an article published in the UK in the January 2007 issue of the Journal of Psychopharmacology disputes this claim.

The researchers conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study at Northumbria University in Newcastle in which the effects of guarana on mood and cognition were assessed. The study found that a dose of 75 milligrams of guarana improved memory and alertness and elevated mood in humans. Furthermore, the study concluded that the effects were so pronounced that they probably could not be explained by the drug's caffeine content alone. The weight loss associated with guarana is well-established, but the reason is not known.
