L-Citrulline is named from the Latin term citrullus, meaning watermelon, which is where the amino acid was first isolated. L-Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid. This amino acid works as an important part of the Urea Cycle, in which the body rids itself of ammonia.
Citrulline is an organic compound, being created from a variety of amino acids including ornithine, carbamoyl phosphate, and arginine. L-Citrulline is not found in normal dietary protein.
Citrulline is not genetically coded to work with the body by DNA directly, but many proteins contain Citrulline as a result of translation modifications that occur when DNA reproduces itself. Since Citrulline is a precursor of arginine, the amino acid provides a readily available supply when arginine is needed and assists in the recycling of arginine. Arginine is used in the body for the production of nitric oxide (NO), which is essential in cardiovascular health and supporting blood flow. Low levels of nitric oxide may cause mental and physical fatigue, along with sexual dysfunction.
L-Citrulline acts as a detoxification system for the body’s liver and kidneys as well as supporting other functions.
