NOW Foods Vitamin E, 400 IU- 100 softgels Vitamin E is a combination of eight different antioxidants with one standing out above the others because of its constant content in the body (Alpha-tocopherol ) and is the only form of vitamin E that is found in tissue and blood in large amounts. This vitamin E is believed to have the highest nutritional value and the one that is recommended for dietary allowance (RDA).

The purpose of vitamin E is to work as an antioxidant removing free radicals that form in the body from environmental pollutants and other toxins. Vitamin E which contains Alpha-tocopherol is a fat-soluble vitamin that works with fat cells, which are an important part of each cell, to stop free radicals from preventing the destruction of lipids. It also works with lipoproteins which are low density fats keeping them from oxidation. Lipoproteins contain proteins and lipids that move fats in the bloodstream and is responsible for moving cholesterol from the liver to the body tissues. Lipoproteins that are oxidize have been linked to cardiovascular disease.

People with genetic defects that affect protein and fat absorption can develop a vitamin E deficiency. Other could experience it from poor diet habits. When vitamin E levels become severely low the individual may experience poor coordination and balance. They could also have weakness of muscles along with retina damage of the eye. Extreme vitamin E deficiency is very uncommon but recent studies show that 90% of people are not getting enough vitamin E in their daily food intake. Vitamin E is a major antioxidant and the primary defense against lipid peroxidation. It is particularly important in protecting the body's cells from free radical/oxidative damage. These protective benefits are achievable with supplemental intakes higher than what is normally consumed in the average diet.

Mixed tocopherols may be superior at inhibiting lipid peroxidation than alpha-tocopherol alone, according to an in vitro study printed in the May 2002 issue of the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology (39, 5:714-21, 2002).
