Optimum Nutrition Glutamine caps, 1000 mg - 240 caps Glutamine which is found in the cells of muscles was once known as a non-essential amino acid is now viewed as an amino acid that the body is dependent on especially during a workout because it is now understood that even though the body can create glutamine on its own the body needs help integrating the glutamine during times of physical exertion. During a workout the body is depleting its glutamine faster than it can rebuild it and so the body requires a supplement that can make up for the inadequacy the body is experiencing at the time of the workout because it is during this time that the body's immune cells are being malnourished.

If the body becomes malnourished during the workout there is a higher risk of injury to the tissue muscles of the athlete which will affect the overall goal results that the athlete is working toward. The muscles and tissues are being broken down and therefore need to be built back up so that the body can perform at its peak. With the help of the glutamine supplement the body is able to heal itself after and during the workout faster.
With the muscles and tissues being broken down during the workout the glutamine supplement is being changed into glucose which will give the body the energy it needs while supporting the new muscles that are being developed.
Though the glutamine supplement is important during a workout for the overall health of the tissues and muscles it does not have a vital role for the daily nutrition that the body requires.
